Sunshine thru Leaves
It's been forever since I posted for Teaser Tuesday. I don't really have anything to post though. I haven't written much in the last few months. I'm starting to get depressed about it, though I will admit to enjoying the free time I've had. I've watched A LOT of movies, including ones such as In the Land of Women, Waitress, Alien VS. Predator 2, National Treasure 2 and Resident Evil 3. All very good movies, excluding AVP2, which was a total bore. I was all excited, entering that theater, thinking I'd get a healthy dose of sci-fi and alien on predator awesomeness. But no.

Anyway, did anyone happen to read Kristin Nelson's blog yesterday? About the blogging soldier that died and had a friend post his last entry? Well, it inspired something in me late last night and I started to write. It's not even one page yet and I don't even know what it's about. The important thing is, I wrote and I wrote something I actually like.

If you’re reading this now, then I’m already dead…

Willa closed her eyes. She didn't want to see the online post anymore. The white text seemed too bright against the black background, like a fluorescent light shining in the darkness.

But instead of finding relief behind her lids, she saw an image of Lincoln, of him three nights ago, staring at her the way he did when he knew he was about to disappoint her.

“I’m leaving for a few days,” he’d said. “Maybe longer.”

“Where are you going?” she’d asked.

He wouldn’t tell her. Instead, he ran his hands through his shoulder-length blond hair, tied it back with a black rubber band. “I’ll call you when I can.”

What she’d gotten instead was an email just an hour ago with a link to an online blog.

The first and only post had a date of April 12th, a time of thirty minutes past midnight.

If you’re reading this now, then I’m already dead…

Keep going.

Is that a real story, or is it from Tim McGraw's song "If You're Reading This", which is amazing, by the way.

To clarify - I know what you wrote is yours. I meant the bit on which it's based.

As far as I know, it's real. And I don't think I know this Tim McGraw song you speak of.

Get thee to iTunes or some other download service ASAP and have listen, but bring tissues. Here's the first verse and chorus:

If you're reading this,
My momma is sitting there
Looks like I only got a one way ticket over here
I sure wish I could give you one more kiss
War was just a game we played when we were kids
Well I’m laying down my gun
I’m hanging up my boots
I’m up here with God
And we’re both watching over you

So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And know my soul
Is where my momma always prayed that it would go.
If you’re reading this I’m already home.

WOW! I really really like this. It hooked me right away!

Yeah thanks!

Very powerful, very intense. Can't wait to see where you go with this! :)

Thanks!

I've been wondering how you've been (largely; you've posted a few times)--I've missed you around here, and your teasers! As usual, you have a good one--intense, lots of questions posed...I hope you get your writing groove back soon.

I have so missed you guys too! This "day job" thing blows! ;) I feel so disconnected from everything. Thankfully, I'm finally going to part-time hours this week (the job I was hired for) so I'm hoping I'll be around a little bit more.

This is great. Like Jackie, I've missed your posts!

I've missed you guys too! I hate not being online. I feel like I've been living in a cave! Hopefully I'll find a good balance between work and everything else soon.

Well...I'd like this more if I didn't have a current WIP in which my protagonist gets an e-mail from a friend near the beginning, only to find out he's already dead. ;-) But I'm sure you are probably going somewhere else with yours than I'm going with mine! (I wrote mine because it actually happened to me, only since it was 20 years ago, it was a snail mail letter, not an e-mail or blog post. It is indeed eerie.)

I have no idea where I'm going with this! It's a mystery so far. ;)

That snail mail letter of yours does sound eerie!

I did see that, and this is a great beginning -- keep going, Jen!

I'm trying Robin! Thanks!
